KIM Dong-Shik 207
The author of Hoesaekingan (Gray Human Beings) and four other books, also a contributor to the SDF Novel SeriesIf you’ve never had a real dream or goal your whole life, how do you stay happy? The answer is to have lots of things to do in your (lots of) spare time. My pastimes of choice have been Korean TV, movies, American TV shows, and animations, games, sports, webtoons, online communities, and YouTube. I became a sort of connoisseur of this kind of content from an early age. But I never once imagined that I would one day be creating it. I dropped out of middle school, after all, and I’ve never been much of a reader, or considered myself especially good at anything. And then I went and wrote a short story. It was in May of 2016. I wasn’t trying to fulfill any deep ambition to become a writer, let alone accomplish anything with my writing. It was just for fun. I wanted to post something on an online forum where people were aspiring writers were sharing their stories. Considering I’d never written anything before in my life, it was quite a mess, to say the least. But people liked it. They said it was fun. I know what fun content is—it’s been my main source of amusement. To know I’d created the same, and given someone that same joy, filled me with an exhilaration and satisfaction that could accurately be called shocking. I began writing more regularly, producing something new every two or three days. Over the next year and a half, I wrote more than 300 pieces, and thanks to the guidance and encouragement of my commenters, I’ve published five books to date, including Hoesaekingan (Gray Human).
I spent many years without a dream, occupied only with having fun. In the process, I discovered that there are few things I enjoy more than giving someone else that gift. So I’m still writing – something new every three days. It’s all for fun.
