In 1970, Kim Chang-wan and his two brothers formed the band Sanulrim and changed Korean music forever. The band went on to release countless hit records, and in 2008, Kim returned to the band scene with the Kim Chang-wan Band, a group that mixes its own unique flavor with the sounds of classic rock, boldly experimenting with a whole spectrum of musical genres, including ballads, psychedelic, punk, and more.
The Kim Chang-wan band both pays tribute to and builds on the Sanulrim legacy of peerless musicality. Creating music that appeals to the nostalgia of older Sanulrim fans as well as the tastes of younger listeners, the band has showcased its powerful sounds and distinct voice at numerous local rock festivals, uniting fans of all generations. Its songs depict the beauty of the life lived with passion, in pursuit of dreams and true fulfillment. Kim Chang-wan made his debut as a musician in 1977 as a member of Sanulrim, a band he started with his two brothers. The band’s debut album and subsequent follow-up album are widely considered masterpieces to this day. Kim went on to make thirteen more albums with Sanulrim, in addition to children’s songs, film music, and solo albums titled Chusin (Postscript), and Gitaga Eetneun Supil (Essays with a Guitar), all featuring the natural, expressive lyrics that have become his trademark. Kim has remained a prolific musician, going on to form the Kim Chang-wan Band in 2008, and is held up by many young people, especially young musicians, as a source of inspiration.
Over four decades, Kim has branched into a wide range of fields, establishing himself as an icon of Korean popular culture, and above all, a versatile artist with a color all his own. In addition to his musical career, he has built a rich career as an actor. Following his debut in the special Children’s Day program Badaui Norae (Song of the Sea) in 1985, he went on to scene-stealing roles in Eunsiri, Yojeong Keommi (Commi the Fairy), and Hayan Geotap (Behind the White Tower). He has brought to life some of the most memorable characters on TV, starring in such popular hits as The First Shop of Coffee Prince, My Love from the Star, Secret Affair, and most recently, Something in the Rain.
Kim is beloved as a radio DJ as well, connecting with listeners every morning on his SBS show, This Beautiful Morning with Kim Chang-wan.
He has been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the course of his career in the arts, including an award for his work in children’s music at the 10th Korea Children’s Song Awards in 1997, a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 Korean Music Awards, the award for Best Radio Host at the 23rd Korea PD Awards in 2011, and a Presidential Citation at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards in 2012. He has also published various books, including Jibe Ganeun Gil (The Road Home), Ijeya Boyine (Now I See), a collection of short stories titled Sayilleonteu Meosin Gilja (Gilja the Silent Machine), and a collection of the opening remarks he wrote himself for his radio show in 2016, titled Annyeong, Naui Modeeun Haru (All the Days of My Life)
