Kyung-Hwan Choi
Minister of Knowledge Economy, the Republic of Korea
With his appointment as Minister of Knowledge Economy in September 2009, Choi Kyunghwan took on the responsibility of steering Korea’s real economy in the aftermath of the global economic downturn. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy coordinates policies for the nation’s industrial, trade and energy sectors.
Since taking office, Choi has overseen the introduction of various policies addressing issues critical to Korea’s future. These include plans to foster new growth engines, implement green growth strategies and promote active trade. He works in conjunction with both the public and private sectors to create new jobs and a more business-friendly environment. On the energy front, Korea secured a milestone nuclear power deal with the United Arab Emirates and hopes to further promote the safe and efficient use of nuclear energy.
Choi has followed a unique career path: he has distinguished himself with work in the Korean government, the media and the National Assembly. He began his civil service career in 1979 and immediately carved out a specialty in economics. Choi worked at the Economic Planning Board, Cheong Wa Dae (the Office of the President), and the Ministry of Planning and Budget (now the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.)
In 1999, after 20 years as a civil servant, Choi made a bold move and started a second career in journalism. He worked for a major business newspaper for five years, during which time he served as an editorial writer and as deputy editor-in-chief. Since 2004, Choi has built a solid reputation in the world of politics as a two-term member of the National Assembly.
He is a graduate of Yonsei University and received his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
