Alfredo Moser
Inventor, Moser Lamp / Mechanic
Alfredo Moser’s simple but revolutionary invention uses plastic bottles filled with water to refract sunlight and light homes without electricity for free. The Moser lamp is in use in a million homes in over 15 countries worldwide.
Instead of seeking to capitalize on his invention, Alfredo has given it away. He has been described as “an inspiration to all of us” and a man who is “rich in wisdom and compassion” by Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the United Nations.
Born in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina in 1951 as one of 12 children, Alfredo began life as a farmhand. He worked in the capital Brasilia as a mechanic before opening his own garage in the city of Uberaba in Minas Gerais state where he continues today.
His ‘light bulb’ moment came in 2002 after a series of blackouts inspired him to think up a novel idea to illuminate his home and garage. In 2011 the idea was picked up in Asia and went viral.
Illac Diaz of the MyShelter Foundation in the Philippines has called for him to be awarded the Nobel Prize: “He has changed millions of lives forever.”
