The Human Brain Project HBP :
Emulating the Brain’s Computational Capabilities
How does our brain work? To answer this ultimate question, the Human Brain Project, a 10-year data integration project funded by 1 billion Euros from the European Union, is creating an innovative approach in science that cuts across disciplines, national borders and academic boundaries to interconnect scientists and their research unifying the way science is conducted. In the first two and a half years, the project will design, build and begin to operate completely new ICT infrastructure for neuroscience, and for brain-related research in computing and medicine. In 2016, HBP’s platforms will be opened to the world scientific community, catalyzing a global collaborative effort to reach a unified understanding of the human brain and its diseases and, ultimately, to emulate its computational capabilities. Henry Markram, renowned neuroscientist and coordinator of the project, offers us an introduction to the revolutionary project.
