Hyun-Soon Lee
Vice Chairman, Hyundai Motor Company
Dr. Hyun Soon Lee is Vice Chairman of the R & D Division of Hyundai Motor Company (HMC).
He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and began his professional career at the General Motors Research Institute. He joined Hyundai Motor Company in 1984.
During his career with HMC, Dr. Lee was instrumental in developing the first engine produced by HMC (α-Engine) and the development of the β-Engine. His history with HMC includes responsibilities for Gasoline and Diesel Engine, Ulsan Vehicle R & D Center and Senior Executive Vice President of the Hyundai and Kia Powertrain Division. He has been in his current position since January this year, 2009.
Dr. Lee has received many awards for his contributions to the automotive industry including the IR52 Jang Young Shil Prize from the Minister of Science and Technology, the Gold Medal for Anti-Pollution Technology Development from Chosun Daily Newspaper. The Federation of Korean Industries presented Dr. Lee with a Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit. Most recently, he was awarded the International Management Institute CEO award for his leadership in technology innovation.
Dr. Lee is a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology. He has held the role of president of the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering in Korea.
