Architect DPLG, CEO of AEV Architectures
Lim Woojin studied architecture at Hongik University in Seoul and ENSAVT(Ecole d'architecture de la ville & des territoires Paris-Est) in Paris. He has worked for over twenty years as a French government-certified architect (DPLG) based in Paris. He has collaborated with great names in French architecture such as Chaix & Morel, Dominique Perrault, and Valode & Pistre on major architecture and city projects across Europe. Notable collaborations include the Petit Palais renovation in Paris and the Promenade Sainte Catherine in Bordeaux, as well as the ECC at Ewha University in Seoul, which he designed with Dominique Perrault. In 2010, he opened the architectural firm AEV Architectures, through which he has carried out unique projects in Paris as well as Korea. He became the first two-time consecutive winner of the Florence Biennale Leonardo da Vinci Award in the Design category for “House in White” in Goseong-gun County, Gangwon-do Province and Restaurant Soon Grill on the Champs-Elysees. His book Invisible City(translated title), published in 2022, is a fascinating exploration of the unseen parts of our cities. He is continuing to expand the scope of his engagement with the general public around the themes of “architecture that speaks” and “the connected city.”
Humans create spaces and cities out of desire and necessity. These spaces and cities, in turn, shape the thinking and lifestyles of those who inhabit them. As Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape buildings; thereafter they shape us.” Why have spaces and cities been created in this way, and how, through our choices, can we transform them? How can we create spaces that make us into more democratic citizens? In this session, an architect shares his reflections on cities, spaces, and the ways they speak.
