“Every crisis is also an opportunity.”
I used to think this was only a cliche, the kind of thing successful people say when they’re itching to brag about all they’ve accomplished.

Then, last spring, the coronavirus pandemic brought my travel reality show Flaming Youth to a grinding halt. We were no longer welcome anywhere. The whole premise of our show was about taking our celebrity cast members on overnight trips to peaceful countryside areas where they could bond and connect, but no locations wanted us. We were practically begged to stay away, and by the fall, we had run out of places to go. With few other options, we rented a campsite on a whim, and decided to try whatever ideas came to mind. That’s how we stumbled on the idea of celebrity women’s soccer.

What unfolded next was somehow both hilarious and serious. Awkward but incredibly riveting. And most powerful of all, the women on the field played like they meant it.

Crises, it turns out, do present opportunities.
I’d stumbled on this discovery by sheer luck. I decided to make it my next show.

Shooting Stars, as we went on to call it, continues to do well, and it has lost none of its earnestness.
You can feel it when you watch the women play - their hearts are in it. It’s an exhilarating experience to be a part of.
