SBS Medical Correspondent, Neurosurgeon
A graduate of Hanyang University Medical School, CHO Dong-Chan completed his training as a neurosurgeon at Hanyang University Hospital. He ended his military service as medical officer in the 27th Division 79th Regiment and director of neurosurgery at the Armed Forces Seoul Hospital and has been a medical correspondent for SBS since 2008. While his reports have mostly focused on prevention of disease and illness as well as early treatment and response, he has also covered heavier social stories and issues, including the toxic humidifier disinfectant scandal, the controversial death certificate of the farmer BEAK Nam-ki, and suspicions around the osteoarthritis gene therapy drug Invossa. He has received generous honors, including a Korea Broadcasting Award, Democratic Media Award, and the Korea Journalist Award, for his social reporting, but he believes that his reports on health and prevention are equally important
There have been moments when Dong-Chan has wondered if his life as a reporter who also happens to be a licensed physician is the result of karma, but all in all, he is grateful for his career. He will never forget interviewing a youth who, despite being in the final stages of cancer, spent his last days volunteering with a smile to cheer up fellow patients at his hospital. He is committed to continuing to do his part, however small, and looks forward to the day the positive impacts of the pandemic begin to overshadow the negative and painful impacts.
