Contemporary Artist, Artist, Korea Pavilion, 2017 Venice Biennale, Winner of 26th Kim Se-choong Sculpture Award, Winner of 1st ARTSPECTRUM Award by Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art
LEE Wan was born and raised in Seoul and majored in sculpture at Dongguk University. He won Best Artist at the 1st ARTSPECTRUM Awards organized by Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in 2014. He was a participating artist in the 10th Gwangju Biennale and won the 26th Kim Se-choong Sculpture Award in 2015. In 2017, he was selected as the featured artist for the Korea Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. His major works include the “made in” series, for which he traveled to 10 countries in Asia to become a primary producer, preparing local items from scratch, and “Proper Time,” for which he developed a formula based on interviews with 1200 people and constructed clocks to show the pace of their respective lives.
In 2019, he collaborated with LVMH brand Moynat to design a signature handbag, which was featured in a tour exhibition in several countries.
Wan has been expanding the scope of his work to include a variety of genres, including video documentaries, installations, sculptures, and photo media technology, which he has used to explore the structures of capitalism, history, politics, and culture and how they shape individual lives and perceptions. He is co-founder and co-director of the Union Art Fair and a director for the Nam June Paik Cultural Foundation.
His works are in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Seoul Museum of Art, and Cheongju Museum of Art.
